A 56-year-old lady was motivated by Indian Council of Agriculture of research-Central Island Agriculture of the research institute (ICAR-CIARI). Smt. Ramjiyayi, an old lady farmer of Kodiyagaht, South Andaman started goat farming with 5 goats about three years back. With the constant support of her family and the ICAR-CIARI she had started feeding mineral supplementation and doing regular de-worming which showed great impact in terms of body weight gain and reproductive efficiency.
Smt. Ramjiyayi was introduced to technical intervention regarding feeding management, housing, timely de-worming, health management feeding of mineral mixture and selection of superior germplasm.
Ramjiyayi uses many good technicalities with great practices and other invention and she is adopting scientific goat farming provided by ICAR-CIARI. Now, she is managing her flock in a very systemic way. Every morning she feeds little supplementation of wheat and rice to her goat with a mineral supplement. After this, she allows them to graze in forest/ open field area near her house for 5-6 hours. Ramjiyayi was also advised for proper cleaning and management of goat shelter for preventing disease.
With the facilities & technology provided by ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair under the All India Coordination Research Project (AICRP) on goat improvement, now she is earning approx Rs. 50,000/- annually by selling them in bucks only. The awareness program by ICAR-CIARI motivated her to register herself in the project which led her to success. By setting the perfect example of self-sufficiency, she has increased her income and is providing better facilities to her children.
