Assam has a net cultivable area of 28.11 lakh hectares, representing 88 percent of the total land area. Agriculture and related activities contributed 15.80% of GSDP at current prices in 2018-19.
Assam, home to one of India's 14 biodiversity hotspots, has agro-climatic conditions that are uniquely diverse and conducive to traditional wealth. Assam has the largest economy in the North East and is heavily reliant on agricultural products. Crops, livestock, forestry and logging, and fishing and aquaculture are all part of the agriculture and allied sector.
Agriculture is the foundation of Assam's economy. Over 75% of the state's population is employed in agriculture as farmers, agricultural labourers, or both. Assam intends to improve its agricultural and allied sector performance through targeted growth in horticulture, fisheries, animal husbandry, and other plantation/cash crops.
The seminar will focus on food processing opportunities for the state in order to develop the food processing sector, promote unit capabilities, and bridge the gap.
