The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India with technical support from GIZ and UNEP and supported by FICCI are organizing training workshops on ‘Extended Producer Responsibility in plastics and packaging waste management across 4 regions in India i.e., Delhi (6th September), Kolkata (9th September 2022), Hyderabad (13th September 2022), and Mumbai (16th September 2022).

India’s plastic consumption is increasing as the country develops economically. An estimate by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural gas suggests that the annual per capita consumption in India would be 20 kgs by 2022. Hence, there is a need of proper segregation of plastic waste for recycling and proper awareness for agencies and waste collectors for alternate uses of plastic waste for wealth creation needs to be created.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has proven to be an efficient mechanism for plastic waste management and tackling the issues of marine litter. An EPR policy is characterized by the shifting of responsibility (physically and/or economically; fully or partially) upstream toward the producer and away from municipalities; and the provision of incentives to producers to consider environmental considerations when designing their products.

Well-designed EPR schemes can reduce the burden on public budgets and incentivize effective collection, sorting, and promote better end-of-life management of wastes. More than being a funding mechanism, EPR schemes strengthen the plastic waste value chain, tries to bring transparency and accountability in the system and incentivize upstream packaging solutions and promote ideas like eco-design.
