Workshop on Biofortification

The global population is expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050. The agricultural supply chain is the most vulnerable to current global crises, such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic endangers human life and health, exacerbated by increased hunger and malnutrition.

Even after numerous scientific breakthroughs, a large portion of the population continues to lack access to or afford an adequate quality diet, resulting in malnutrition and undernutrition. As a result, it is critical that the biofortified crops sector receives sustained and focused attention through policy and financial support to accelerate its development in a sustainable, responsible, inclusive, and equitable manner.

Fortification is the deliberate addition of an essential micronutrient (i.e., vitamins and minerals) to staple foods to improve their nutritional quality while providing a health benefit to the public with minimal risk. Biofortification is the most sustainable and cost-effective method of improving the nutritional status of crops, which will improve the health of malnourished people worldwide. Biofortification approaches have a lot of promise for combating micronutrient malnutrition.

FICCI is organizing the Conference on Biofortification in five states in collaboration with Syngenta Foundation India, GAIN, and Harvestplus. The conference aims to provide a platform for all stakeholders to outline the opportunities for eradicating malnutrition and deliberate on policy and operational actions required to unleash the potential of biofortified crops in the country.
