Nine lemons from a temple in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district were
auctioned for ₹2.36 lakh. Devotees believe that consuming these lemons can cure infertility.
The temple for Lord Muruga in Villupuram auctions these lemons during
the annual Panguni Uthiram festival. Many couples seeking children visit the temple during this
festival to bid on the lemons.
The lemon spiked on the deity's spear on day one of the festival is
considered the most potent. It was bought by a couple for ₹50,500 this year.
Locals say that these lemons bring fortune, attracting not only couples
but also businessmen and traders. Bidders must take holy baths before accepting the priest’s
offering.
Lemons hold a revered status in spirituality, representing purity and
eliminating negative energies. They are also used in rituals associated with black magic.
The annual festival perpetuates customs and beliefs, seeking blessings
for fertility and prosperity. These lemons remain a symbol of faith and tradition in the
region.
