It is proclaimed by the United Nations to increase understanding and
awareness about biodiversity-related issues.
It was created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in
late 1993. Originally designated as 29 December, it marks the entry of the Convention on
Biological Diversity.
The day is observed globally on May 22 to promote biodiversity awareness
and action. A key date for international efforts to preserve and protect biodiversity.
