Makar Sankranti (January 15) is a harvest festival dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. The day marks the sun's transit into Makara (Capricorn) Rashi (zodiac sign).

Following the sun's transit, it is a celebration of the change of season.  As the lengthy winter fades away, it paves the way for spring, promising renewed vitality.

New crops are worshiped and shared amongst each other. Rice, sugarcane, banana, coconut, and sesame are some of the harvests enjoyed during this day.

Legends Say

Hindu legends say that Sankranti, a deity, killed the demon Sankarasur on Makar Sankranti. The day after, the deity killed another demon called Kinkarasur which is why this day is known as Kinkrant.
