dedicated to preserving indigenous seeds and has gained national recognition for her
efforts.
Her work with the BAIF Development Research Foundation, supported by the
Department of Science and Technology, has revolutionized agricultural practices in
Maharashtra.
President Ram Nath Kovind presented her with the Padma Shri award,
recognizing her tireless efforts in preserving over 50 traditional seed varieties.
Despite facing adversity and lacking formal education, Rahibai's passion
for farming and seed conservation was ignited by her surroundings and experiences.
Hailing from the Mahadeo Koli Tribal community, Rahibai's came from
humble roots. Growing up in poverty, she started working in agriculture at the age of 10 to
support her family.
Over the years, she has conserved over 50 traditional seed varieties,
including paddy, pulses, and millets. Her efforts have safeguarded biodiversity and empowered
local farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
Rahibai's commitment to preserving native seed varieties and advocating
for organic farming has earned her widespread acclaim.
Rahibai's legacy as the 'Seed Mother' inspires generations to prioritize
seed sovereignty and sustainable agriculture.
Rahibai has empowered thousands of farmers across Maharashtra. She has
conducted training sessions on organic farming techniques, vermicomposting, and seed selection,
impacting over 3500 farmers in the Ahmednagar district alone.
Rahibai embodies the spirit of resilience, determination, and service to
the farming community. Her dedication to seed conservation and sustainable farming practices has
transformed agriculture in Maharashtra.
