The day is observed every
year on December 1st to unite against HIV/AIDS and
honor lives lost.
The 2024 theme, “Take the
Rights Path,” emphasizes removing barriers to
healthcare and upholding human rights to end
AIDS.
In 2023, India saw 66,400
new cases, while globally, 13 lakh new infections
were reported, a 39% decrease since 2010.
Thanks to awareness and
access to ART, over 75% of people with HIV globally
receive treatment, enabling healthier lives.
India’s National AIDS
Control Programme has achieved an 82% reduction in
AIDS-related deaths since 2010, but challenges
remain.
Recognizing the rights of
vulnerable groups, like women, LGBTQ+ individuals,
and sex workers, is vital to ending the
epidemic.
HIV prevention begins with
safe practices, regular testing, and the use of
medications like PrEP and ART.
