The Earth Summit, also known as the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, originated the term- International Day for Biological Diversity. World leaders acknowledged the urgent need to combat the worldwide destruction of biodiversity during this historic event. Subsequently, on May 22, 1992, a significant number of nations adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

An international agreement known as the CBD aims to protect biodiversity, encourage its sustainable use and guarantee the equitable and fair distribution of the advantages associated with genetic resources. It lays up guidelines for the preservation and long-term administration of ecosystems, species, and genetic resources.

The International Day for Biological Diversity provides a forum for people all around the world to emphasize the significance of biodiversity in sustaining life on Earth. The vast variety of living things—including plants, animals, and microorganisms—and the environments they inhabit are together referred to as biodiversity. It offers crucial ecosystem services like pollination, the cycling of nutrients, the filtration of water, and climate control.

Furthermore, biodiversity is a source of aesthetic, economic, and cultural value that helps sustain livelihoods and promotes sustainable development.

The theme for International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 is "From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity."
