AIKKMS Urges Govt. to Set Up Cotton Procurement Centres; Buy at MSP of Rs 12,000 Per Quintal

The All India Kisan Khet Mazdoor Sanghatan (AIKKMS) has urged the State government to establish procurement centres in Yadgir district, Karnataka and begin purchasing cotton at a minimum support price of 12,000 per quintal immediately, as the price of cotton in the open market has dropped dramatically.

Rising global inflation has impacted textile demand, and cotton prices have plummeted dramatically.

On January 4, the sanghatan staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner's office, shouting slogans demanding that the government begin purchasing cotton. Cotton prices were reasonable in October of last year, but they suddenly dropped to Rs 7,500 per quintal from Rs 10,000.

Farmers who have spent more than 30,000 per acre from sowing to harvesting, including seeds, fertiliser, and chemicals, have been shocked by the sudden drop in price.

More importantly, most farmers are dissatisfied with the yield, which has been very low and has fallen short of their expectations.

Farmers could harvest around 15 quintals per acre in previous years, but due to continuous rainfall, they only obtained 8 to 10 quintals per acre this time.

As a result, they suffered another type of loss, as the protesters brought attention to the issue. They urged the state government to help farmers immediately by opening procurement centres and purchasing cotton at a rate of Rs 12,000 per quintal.

They later submitted a memo to the authorities. Sharanagowda Gugal and Bheemareddy, the organization's district president and secretary, were present, as were others.

Cotton Corporation of India purchases cotton in all major cotton-growing states through a network of approximately 315 procurement centres. It purchases cotton in all cotton-growing states from regulated APMCs in the presence of APMC officials.
