Chhath Puja, a popular Hindu festival, honours the Sun God, Surya, and his wife, Chhathi Maiyya or Usha. On this day, devotees pray to the deities and express gratitude to the source of life on Earth. Chhath puja is observed for four days following Diwali. Every year, it falls on the sixth day of the Hindu calendar's Kartikeya month.

In Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Nepal, devotees gather near water bodies such as dams, lakes, and rivers to pray, as this festival does not involve idolatry.
The festival is mentioned in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In the Ramayana, Sita is said to have performed Surya Shashthi or Chhath Puja on the day Ramrajya was established, whereas in the Mahabharata, Kunti (the Pandavas' mother) performed the puja after they escaped from Lakshagrih, on the banks of the Ganga.
