Experts Discuss Ways to Make Agriculture More Sustainable

A round table discussion on “Sustainable Agriculture & Biodiversity: Small & Medium Enterprise Solutions” was conducted by the European Union Commission on October 28 at Development Alternative Conference Hall, B-32, Tara Crescent, Qutub Institutional Area, New Delhi.

The main motive of the conference was to provide solutions for sustainable agriculture and to boost resource efficiency.

Several eminent personalities from the agriculture sector including MC Dominic, Editor-in-Chief of Krishi Jagran & Agriculture World took part in the discussion and shared their thoughts and approaches towards sustainable agriculture.

MC Dominic with more than 26 years of experience in the agriculture sector shared his views and said that as media plays an important role in disseminating information to the people, it's high time more agri-media houses come forward and help the government in achieving sustainable agriculture goals.      

Some of the key topics discussed by the international dignitaries included job security, national capital accounting, food systems, increasing agricultural productivity, and enhancement of global biodiversity.

Some important areas that the EU and India will focus on while framing the policies are as follows.

  • Production and distribution of affordable sustainable and diversified crop production to reduce excess nutrients and pesticides.

  • Anticipating the timely predictable development of the profitable demand markets for green diversification for local and global platforms. Dispersing the apt information to consumers and building traceability through efficient trustworthy labels.

  • Further developing the digital tools for more sustainable land use and even the improvement of extension services and entrepreneurial skills.

  • Linking the Local green enterprises (LGE) to disseminate locally is a challenge to overcome.

  • Assess the performance of drones, data mining, remote sensing, etc. in sustainability.

  • Facilitate access to finance.

A general discussion was also held at the end of the session wherein participants talked about how to improvise the policy and bring impactful changes. A few also suggested that agriculture should be included as a subject at the school level to increase the interest of youngsters in the agriculture sector. One of the participants said that we need to have a diverse gene bank at the local level.
