The 14th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM14) and 8th Mission Innovation (MI-8) meeting will be held in Goa, India from July 19th to July 22nd, 2023. This four-day event, scheduled on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting, will bring together government officials, international organizations, private sector leaders, academia, innovators, civil society representatives, early career researchers, and policymakers from around the world. The theme for this year's CEM and MI meetings is "Advancing Clean Energy Together."
CEM14 and MI-8 aim to accelerate the global transition to clean energy by fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and promoting the development and deployment of clean energy technologies. The program includes high-level ministerial dialogues, the launch of global initiatives, the announcement of awards, minister-CEO roundtables, and a wide array of side events covering various aspects of clean energy transition.
One of the highlights of CEM14/MI-8 will be a public-facing technology showcase, featuring cutting-edge clean energy advancements from India and other countries. This exhibition will provide a platform for participants to explore innovative solutions and inspire further collaboration in the field of clean energy.
The ministerial plenaries are scheduled to take place on July 21, 2023, while the G20 Energy Transition Ministerial Meeting will be held back-to-back on July 22. These meetings will facilitate discussions on key topics such as the adoption of green hydrogen towards achieving net-zero emissions, the establishment of common standards for international trade in green hydrogen, and the importance of global cooperation in transitioning to a sustainable future.
During the launch event held at the Power Ministry in New Delhi, Union Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R. K. Singh, along with Union Science & Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, unveiled the official website and logo for CEM14 and MI-8. The website, accessible at https://www.cem-mi-india.org/, provides detailed information on delegate registration, the program overview, speaker profiles, participant and member portals, and more.
Minister R. K. Singh emphasized India's commitment to clean energy and highlighted the country's rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity, even amid the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that India has emerged as a global leader in energy transition and climate action. Minister Singh also stressed the importance of open trade and collaboration among nations to achieve the shared goal of a greener world.
The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) was established in 2009 as a global forum to promote policies and programs that advance clean energy technology, facilitate knowledge sharing, and encourage the transition to a clean energy economy. It currently comprises 29 members, including the European Commission and 28 governments from countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Mission Innovation (MI), on the other hand, is a global forum of 23 countries and the European Commission committed to accelerating clean energy revolution and progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the pathway to net-zero emissions. MI aims to catalyze action, investments, and research in clean energy, making it affordable, attractive, and accessible to all.
CEM and MI work in tandem to share best practices, facilitate international cooperation, and drive collective action towards a global clean energy economy. They achieve this through the Annual Ministerial meeting, which includes plenaries, side events, and high-level roundtables, as well as year-round technical initiatives and campaigns.
The upcoming CEM14 and MI-8 meeting in Goa will provide a platform for global stakeholders to collaborate, exchange ideas, and accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies, thereby paving the way for a sustainable and low-carbon future.
