Here’s How You Can Link Your PAN and Aadhar Through SMS

The deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar cards is March 31, 2023. The government has stated that if a person does not link their PAN and Aadhaar cards by the deadline, their PAN would become inactive. Recently, the Income Tax department declared it mandatory for PAN holders to link the card with their Aadhaar by the end of March 2023 or it will become "inoperative".

The Indian government stated in a recent advisory that "It is necessary. Don't delay, link it today! According to the I-T Act, all PAN holders who are not exempt must connect their permanent account numbers (PAN) with their Aadhaar before March 31, 2023. The unlinked PAN will become inactive on April 1, 2023." It should also be reminded that anyone who does not link their PAN and Aadhaar by the March 31, 2023 deadline will face consequences.

There are several ways for connecting PAN and Aadhaar. The simplest method is to connect by SMS. Let's have a look at how to link your PAN and Aadhaar cards via text messages.

How to link Aadhaar and PAN cards through SMS

  • Head over to the text message app

  • Now type a message in UIDPAN format

  • All you have to do is type: UIDPAN (space) (space) 12-digit Aadhaar card (space) 10-digit PAN number

  • Next, send an SMS from your registered phone number to either 567678 or 56161

  • After submitting the message, you will receive a confirmation message verifying the linking of your Aadhaar and PAN card

How to link PAN - Aadhaar cards online

If this method does not work, you can just go to the Income Tax Department of India's website.

  • Simply go to eportal.incometax.gov.in or incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in to get started.

  • Create an account on the website. It is important to know that your PAN or Aadhaar number will be used as your user ID.

  • To access the site, enter your user ID, password, and DOB.

  • A pop-up window will display, or you can just click on the 'Quick Links' link on the site.

  • On the homepage, choose the Link Aadhaar option.

  • You can now enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, as well as your name as it appears on your Aadhaar card. 

  • Now check the "I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card" box if applicable.

  • Type the Captcha to verify

  • After successfully linking your Aadhaar and PAN card, you will receive a confirmation notification.

It should be noted that if the information on your PAN and Aadhaar card does not match, you will receive a rejection message. In such a situation, you will need to resubmit with updated information to link the two documents.
