"India’s Textile Industry Experiencing Positive Development," says G. Kishan Reddy

Tiruppur will be the backbone for India's textile production, as the knitwear industry here accounts for 50% of the nation's exports, said Union Minister of Tourism G. Kishan Reddy on Monday at the NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion in Tiruppur.

India is a major producer of cotton and jute in the world. India is also the world's second-largest producer of silk, accounting for 95% of all hand-woven fabric.

"India's textile industry is witnessing positive development with a separate ministry for the sector," he said to students during a session on AatmaNirbhar Bharat.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi hopes to increase India's textile export worldwide. Tiruppur's contribution is significant in this regard. Foreign business investments are encouraged, and the textile industry is advancing.

The Tirupur knitwear industry accounts for roughly half of the country's exports. "India will lead the world in textile production, with Tiruppur serving as the backbone," the Minister stated.

India's domestic apparel and textile industry contributes approximately 2% of the country's GDP and 7% of industry output in value terms. In 2020-21, textile, apparel, and handicrafts accounted for 11.4% of India's total exports. India accounts for 4% of global textile and apparel trade.
