Why Bohar Bhaji of Chhattisgarh is so Expensive, What’s unique about this Leafy Vegetable

Bohar Bhaji is one of the greens mostly grown in Chhattisgarh, and is available only for few days throughout the year. Its cost is also high, but because of its great taste, people are ready to pay all costs.

People in Chhattisgarh eat more vegetables and greens and this makes their farming and tastes unique. Food mostly depends on the natural and geographical location of any place. In Chhattisgarh, more plains and wooded areas are there. That’s why greens are more common in vegetables. 

Bohar Bhaji is one of the greens mostly grown in Chhattisgarh and is available only for few days throughout the year. Its cost is also high, but because of its great taste, people are ready to pay high costs. Its cost is nearly Rs. 400 for a kg.

Bohar Bhaji is available mostly in the month of March-May. 

About Bohar Tree 

Bohar Bhaji grows on trees, these are actually buds and soft leaves which are plucked before they turn into flowers in few days. It is very difficult to pluck the buds from the thin branches of the tall tree, and is risky too. So, only experienced ones can do so.

Not only in Chhattisgarh but, Bohar trees are available in other states also, with different names in different regions. It is known by the names Lasoda, Gunda, Bhokar in other states. The botanical name of Bohar is Cordia dichotoma. And in English, it is also known as Bird Lime Tree, Indian Berry, and Glue Berry. 

Bohar fruits are used to prepare pickles in many states of India, but Bohar Bhaji is famous in Chhattisgarh only.
