Following recalls by food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore on Indian spices sold by renowned brands due to elevated levels of ethylene oxide—a carcinogenic pesticide—India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has decided to act. Reports indicating the presence of high amounts of ethylene oxide have prompted FSSAI to initiate testing on samples of these spices.

As per the latest by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), alarming levels of ethylene oxide, a banned substance in the EU, have been detected in various food samples. Out of 2026 samples tested, a staggering 2.3% exceeded the Maximum Residue Level (MRL), with products like curcuma, chili peppers, peppercorn, and dried beans from India being among the worst offenders.

But that's not all! Even organic products are not spared from harmful chemicals. Shockingly, non-authorized substances like chlorpyrifos and propiconazole were found in organic farming samples from third countries, posing a serious health risk to consumers. Its processing techniques aimed at reducing microbiological contamination have backfired, leading to the presence of ethylene oxide in products like guar gum and curry powder.

It is hence evident that spices today contain high levels of pesticide residues. Such raises concerns about their impact on human health. Considering this, organic spices could become the new trend. Produced without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, its organic farming methods prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and sustainability. So, let us look at the advantages of organic spices:

Health Benefits: Organic spices are free from pesticide residues, making them a safer choice for consumption. They are also rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants, which contribute to overall health and well-being.

Superior Flavor: Organic spices are renowned for their vibrant flavors and aromas. Grown in nutrient-rich soil and harvested at peak ripeness, these spices offer unparalleled taste and freshness.

Ethical Considerations: Choosing organic spices supports farmers who adhere to sustainable and ethical farming practices.
