Majority of the women globally suffer from a nutritional deficiency disease anaemia due to the deficiency of iron Folic acid. As per FAO, about more than 2 billion people in the world do not have regular access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food. They may be undernourished or malnourished. The waste for one may be food for others. In this vast populated world food should never go waste. If it may be excess for one which may be needy for the other. Understanding this scenario is at most important which is the need of the hour.
PM Modi dedicates 17 new biofortified varieties of 8 crops to the nation. These biofortified crops will have up to 3 fold increase in the nutritional value, which will transform normal Indian thali in to nutri Thali.
These varieties have been developed by utilising the local land races and farmer’s varieties. These crops are rich in essential nutrients like Iron, zinc, calcium, protein, lysine, tryptophan, Vitamin A and C, Anthocyanin, oleic acid and linoleic acid. These crops have reduced antinutritional factors like erucic acid, trypsin inhibitor etc. that affect the human growth and development. In order to usher the higher income of farmers and open the new avenues of entrepreneurship development production of these crops will be upscale and linked with the government programs of mid day meal and anganwadi and make India “kuposhan Mukt” biofortified crops provide a sustainable and cost effective solution to alleviate malnutrition. These crops also serve as an excellent source of balance feed for livestock in improving their nutritional incomes.
