Our minds are our strongest companions. Keeping it agile and healthy should not come as an option. Here are five herbs with scientific backing that aids memory loss and boosts your brain function:

Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri):

This Ayurvedic herb has been revered for centuries for its mind-enhancing properties. Studies suggest Brahmi can improve memory, learning, and focus.  Brahmi is readily available in capsules, powders, and even tea form. Brahmi is also known to alleviate anxiety and stress. This Ayurvedic staple contains string antioxidants for better cognitive functions.

Brahmi tablets are easily available and are safe to consume.

Ashwagandha:

Another Ayurvedic gem is Ashwagandha. It is an adaptogen – a class of herbs that help the body manage stress and anxiety.  This, in turn, benefits cognitive function and memory. A study in the "Journal of Dietary Supplements" showed significant improvements in cognitive performance, attention, and information processing speed after Ashwagandha supplementation. The herb reduces cortisol, a stress hormone, promoting a calmer mind and better memory function. If you are having sleep deprivation, Ashwagandha is a great choice. It helps calm the brain and brings your mind at peace.

Ashwagandha comes in powder form, often mixed with milk or honey, or as capsules. Regular intake, particularly in the evening, can help manage stress and improve brain function over time.

Turmeric:

This vibrant spice is a powerhouse for brain health. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both linked to cognitive decline.

Turmeric is easily incorporated into your diet through curries, golden milk (a warm beverage with turmeric and milk), or even turmeric tea. You can also consume turmeric with black pepper. Black pepper contains piperine, which significantly enhances curcumin absorption by the body.

Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica):

Gotu Kola is a traditional herb known to enhance memory and cognitive function. It improves blood circulation and strengthens the nervous system, both crucial for brain health. This herb contains triterpenoids, which enhance mental clarity and concentration. The National Library of Medicine published a research paper about the Indian Centella Asiatica and its effect on oxidative stress, anxiety, and Alzheimer’s. The study showed that this psychoactive herb has medicinal properties that aids neuroinflammation and increases cognitive abilities.

You can simply chew 3-4 leaves of gotu kola every morning to reap its benefits.

These are just a few examples of the many herbs with potential cognitive benefits. Remember, incorporating these herbs into your routine should complement a healthy lifestyle rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. While research is ongoing, these natural options offer a promising approach to supporting brain health and memory function.
