Krishi Jagran & Harvest Plus to Co-Host a Webinar on Nutrition Smart Agriculture on 27 May
Inclusion of nutrient-enriched crops is considered a nutrition-smart agriculture approach, taking into account the role of bio-fortified seeds, whose nutritional quality has been improved through agronomic practises, conventional plant breeding, or modern biotechnology.
Nutrition-smart agriculture, as we all know, is a food-based approach to agricultural development that emphasises the availability and accessibility of nutrient-dense foods as a means of combating malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. It focuses on increasing farmer and rural community productivity, income, and profits, as well as improving human nutritional status.
The inclusion of nutrient-enriched crops is considered a nutrition-smart agriculture approach, taking into account the role of bio-fortified seeds, whose nutritional quality has been improved through agronomic practices, conventional plant breeding, or modern biotechnology. Bio-fortified crops were only adopted when they became as productive and resistant to pests and diseases as regular varieties, and when they satisfied consumer tastes and other preferences.
Objectives of Webinar:
-
Discuss the trends and key aspects involved in promoting nutrition smart agriculture
-
Discuss appropriate linkages between nutrition, agriculture, and income pathways in building resilient food systems
-
Discuss relevant approaches such as the integration of nutrient-enriched crops as a strategy to alleviate malnutrition and poverty in low-income households
