Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Expected in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, Cold Wave Hits Northern India with Dense Fog

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall across southern states, cold wave conditions in northern and central regions, and dense fog in the east. A well-marked low-pressure area over the Gulf of Mannar is expected to weaken, while a Western disturbance continues to influence the northern parts of the country.

Weather Systems in Play

  • Low Pressure Area Over Gulf of Mannar: The well-marked low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka has moved to the Gulf of Mannar. It is expected to weaken gradually over the next 12 hours as it moves west-northwestwards towards South Tamil Nadu.

  • Western Disturbance: A cyclonic circulation persists over north Pakistan with an associated trough at 5.8 km above sea level.

Rainfall Forecasts and Warnings

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts significant rainfall activity across southern and coastal regions of India from December 12 to 18, 2024. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and other regions are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places during this period. Cold Wave and Temperature Forecast

India is bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures as cold wave conditions grip several northern, central, and eastern states. With minimum temperatures dipping to as low as 1°C in parts of Rajasthan, regions such as Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to experience severe cold waves over the coming days. Gradual temperature changes are also anticipated in East and West India, signaling the onset of harsher winter conditions.

Dense Fog Warnings

Dense fog is expected during late-night and early-morning hours in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar until December 13, while the northeastern states are likely to experience similar conditions until December 17. Additionally, isolated ground frost is anticipated in Uttar Pradesh on December 13

Delhi/NCR Weather

Delhi/NCR is set to experience mostly clear skies over the next few days, accompanied by cold wave conditions in isolated areas. Smog and mist are likely during the evening and night hours, with temperatures remaining below normal. The region will see northwest winds ranging from 6–14 kmph, contributing to the chilly weather. Residents are advised to prepare for cold mornings and reduced visibility during early hours.
