Scarification

In botany, scarification refers to the process of weakening, opening, or otherwise modifying a seed's covering to promote germination. Scarification frequently involves mechanical, thermal, and chemical processes. Many plant species have seeds that are frequently impermeable to gases and water, which prevents or delays germination.
