Now farmers will be able to save their wheat crops from the damage caused due to heat. A new variety of wheat, PBW-824, has been developed by the scientists of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana.

PBW-824 Wheat: Characteristics

Its specialty is that it gives higher yield than other varieties of wheat being planted in Punjab at present. Apart from this, it is also capable of fighting diseases like yellow rust and heat. This variety gives more production even when in higher temperatures.

In March, this variety of wheat was prepared by scientists of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics of the university. Scientists claim that by cultivating this variety, the farmer can earn profit by taking more production. It can be sown early and on time. Its average height is 10 cm and matures in about 156 days. This variety can be sown in number of ways.

Virinder Singh Sohu, in-charge of wheat section, says that wheat is sown in about 35 lakh hectares in Punjab. Out of this, three varieties of wheat HD 3086, HD 2967 and PB W 725 are planted in about 24 lakh hectare area. About 40 percent area comes under HD 3086 variety and its average shrub is 23 quintals per acre, while HD 2967 variety is planted in 20 percent area.

Its average yield is 21.4 qtl/acre. At the same time, ten percent area comes under PBW 725 variety and its average shrub is 22.9 quintals per acre. About 70 percent of the area comes under all three varieties.

On the other hand, trials were conducted at the national level for the last several years for the PBW 824 variety, in which the North Western region comes. We observed that the average yield of PBW 824 variety is 23.3 qtl/acre.
