The Agnipath Scheme

On June 14, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the Agnipath Recruitment Scheme. The Agneepath scheme, which promises radical changes in recruitment for the Indian Armed Forces, would add 46,000 soldiers to the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and India Air Force.

The scheme was announced in a press conference shortly after the cabinet committee approved it.

Recruits would be trained in the necessary skills by the armed forces for the duration of four years. Agniveers are recruits hired through the scheme. As a result of the uncertainty of their future, Indian Army aspirants have taken to the streets to protest the scheme.
