Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana or PMJDY is a government scheme launched by the Centre to ensure financial inclusion of every individual who doesn’t have a bank account in the country. This government scheme is aimed at providing access to financial services like Banking / Savings & Deposit Accounts, Credit, Insurance, Remittance & Pension in a reasonable way to all. PMJDY was launched in August 2014.
Jan Dhan Yojana Eligibility
To open an account under PMJDY, you need to fulfill the conditions given below;
- Be a citizen of India
- Age should be 10 years and above
- Do not have a bank account
What are the documents needed to open an account under PMJDY
The following documents would be required to open an account under this scheme;
1.Passport
2.PAN Card
3.Voter’s ID issued by Election Commission of India
4.Driving license
5.Job card issued by NREGA duly signed by a State Government official
6. Letter issued by Unique Identification Authority of India with details like name, address & Aadhaar number, or
Any other document as notified by Centre in consultation with the Regulator - Provided that where simplified measures are applied to verify the identity of applicant, the following documents shall be deemed to be officially valid;
- ID card with the applicant's photo issued by Central or State Govt. Departments, Public Sector Undertakings, Statutory/Regulatory Authorities, Scheduled Commercial Banks & Public Financial Institutions.
- Letter issued by a Gazetted officer and a duly attested photo of the person.
PMJDY Account Opening Form
Along with any of the abovementioned documents, you need to submit a duly filled application form that contains the following details to be filled in;
- Basic details like name, address, occupation, PAN, Aadhaar number
- Annual income
- Number of dependents
- Details of assets
- Existing bank account details of any family member

What are the benefits of PMJDY Scheme
Insurance Benefits
The account holders under Jan Dhan Yojana gets an accidental insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh & a life cover of Rs 30,000. The payment will be given on the death of the beneficiary.
Loan Benefits
Jan Dhan Yojana account holders can also avail an overdraft facility of up to Rs 5,000. This facility is available against one account per family. The amount of loan may look small but it is definitely a boon to those below poverty line in India.
Mobile Banking Facility
Enabling carrying out transactions via mobile phone facilitates the account holders in checking balance and transferring funds easily across India.
Other benefits:
- Account holders will be eligible for interest on their deposits
- They are not authorized to have a minimum balance in account
- PMJDY allows Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for beneficiaries of Govt. schemes
- Account-holders also get easy access to pension as well as other insurance products with this scheme.
