A New Government Report Suggests Rs 2,904 Crore Compensation for Farmers of This Region

Farmers in India witness crop loss due to erratic rainfall as well as drought-like situations. And this is one of the reasons for their miserable condition. According to a new government report, a compensation of Rs 2,904.36 crore needs to be given to farmers for the crop loss due to unseasonal rainfall in this region.

The report, which was made by the Aurangabad divisional commissioner’s office has mentioned that unseasonal rainfall has affected as many as 44,33,549 farmers, damaging crops over 41,49,175 hectares of land in eight districts of Maharashtra’s Marathwada region.

Parag Soman , Deputy Divisional Commissioner told Press Trust of India that the report, based on a review conducted by the revenue department, was submit to the state administration last week.

It is important to mention that currently, Maharashtra is under the President’s rule.

The perennially drought-stricken region of Marathwada experienced poor rainfall this monsoon season, but was pounded by heavy showers in the month of October, which destroyed the standing Kharif crops.

Soman said, “We need Rs 2,904.36 crore to compensate the farmers in the region". He added that “In majority of the cases, ready crops were spoiled in the fields before they could be harvested".

He further told that the worst hit were Nanded, Beed & Aurangabad districts and require more than Rs 400 crore each in compensation.  

The report added that while un-irrigated lands dependent only on rainfall would get compensation at the rate of Rs 6,800 / hectare, the irrigated lands would obtain Rs 13,000 / hectare & orchards Rs 18,000 /hectare.

The report also mentioned that a total of 50,20,591 hectares of land came under cultivation in the region this monsoon season.   

Also note that the government had recently sanctioned Rs 10,000 crore as immediate assistance to the farmers affected by unseasonal rainfall across the state of Maharashtra. Not only in Maharashtra but farmers in other parts of the country also faced huge loss due to unwanted or incessant rainfall.
