Farmers Protest

On Monday, Punjab’s biggest opposition group, AAP, said it would organize a 'Kisan Mahasammelan' in Moga district on March 21 in support of the ongoing protest of farmers against the farm laws of the Centre.

Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Party and Delhi Chief Minister, would attend the gathering, it added. For nearly three months, thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, have been camping at the border points of Delhi to press for the abolition of the three agribusiness laws enacted last September and a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP).

‘On March 21, the AAP agreed to hold a 'Kisan Maha Sammelan' at Bagha Purana in Moga to further reinforce the ongoing agitation of farmers,' said party MP Bhagwant Mann. He said farmers from all over Punjab will be invited to the event to participate.

‘We want CM Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi to engage in this 'mahasammelan,' he said. The Aam Aadmi Party was adamant in its support for the uprising of the farmers. In favor of the rally, Kejriwal is scheduled to address the 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut on February 28.

Mann, accompanied by Jarnail Singh the Punjab unit in charge of AAP, co-incharge Raghav Chadha and MLA Harpal Singh Cheema, said the Center should revoke the three farm laws and provide MSP with a legal guarantee.

The government has said that the current farm laws will help farmers by freeing them from the intermediaries' clutches and implementing new technologies in the field. However, farmers fear these laws will dismantle the MSP's safety net and leave them at the hands of large companies.
