Highlight: North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation limited has exported a total of 50 MT of Maize to Bangladesh from Burigaon of Darrang district in Assam. This is the first ever export consignment of Maize to Bangladesh.

The consignment was sourced from farmers of Burigaon of Darrang district and will give a further boost to their income. The initial consignment of maize was of 50 MT but the NERAMAC expects that this will open the gates for export of various Agri- horticulture produces from North East India. NERAMAC had partnered with Simura Industrial & Mercantile Company Ltd in Bangladesh for this consignment.

Assam’s Agriculture minister, Atul Bora, flagged off the shipment in the presence of host dignitaries. He said that the Assam has a lot of potential for tapping new markets and bringing better earnings for farmers of the state. He congratulated NERAMAC for their efforts and was positive that this will be a start of many more export transactions from the state.

Bangladesh requires about 43 Lakh MT of Maize every year. The neighboring country can meet more than half of their requirement from the north eastern region. In future, there can be ancillary industries like Corn flakes, furfural alcohol from hops etc.”

He also thanked the team NERAMAC led by Arjun Bhopal, for its tireless work towards closing the transactions meeting all statutory requirements of export marketing.
