Big News for Farmers: Centre Increases MSP for Six Rabi Crops

The Central Government has decided to increase the Minimum Support Price (SSP) on Rabi crops from 50 to 300 rupees in Lok Sabha today and the Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has approved in the Lok Sabha Session to increase the MSP of Rabi crop from Rs. 50 to Rs. 300. The MSP has been increased for 6 Rabi crops, which include an increase of Rs 50 in wheat, Rs 225 in gram, Rs 300 in lentils, Rs 225 in mustard, Rs 75 in barley, and Rs 112 per quintal in safflower. Overall the rise is between 50%-106% for the crops from last marketing year.  

The decision to raise MSP for the Rabi crops i.e. Wheat, Chana, Barley Lentil (Masur), Mustard and Safflower Seed has been taken, ahead of the new season arrival of these crops. This move is also likely to give a boost to the farmers, in enhancing their income levels. From a broader perspective, this decision is expected to keep average mandi prices of these crops on upward track in coming months.  

The government has increased the MSP of six Rabi crops for the marketing year 2021-22. The MSP of wheat has increased to Rs 1975 with an increase of Rs 50 per quintal. MSP will be 5100 per quintal after an increase of Rs 225 in gram. The lentil will be increased by Rs 300 per quintal followed by Rs 5100 quintal. Mustard has been increased by Rs 225 and now its MSP is 4650 per quintal. MSP of the Barley crop has been increased by Rs 75 to Rs 1600 per quintal. On the other hand the New MSP of Safflower will be Rs 5327 an increase of 112 per quintal over previous year. The revised prices /production cost/net returns for farmers are given in the table below:
