New Coloured Varieties of Wheat

The National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) located in Mohali, Punjab has prepared these coloured varieties of wheat i.e. purple, black and blue. Currently, it has been cultivated in several hundred acres of land. This cultivation was mainly done in Punjab, UP, Haryana and Bihar. The farming is also being tested by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) to spread the benefits of this new variety to the people. In addition, if there is any kind of damage from it, then it can also be detected. After this, its cultivation can start all over the country. NABI started working on it since 2011 after getting information from Japan. It has been successful after experimenting for several seasons.

Benefits of coloured wheat varieties

  • You can get the required amount of anthocyanin from colored wheat.

  • Anthocyanin is an antioxidant and eating it will help prevent problems like heart diseases, diabetes and obesity.

  • While its quantity is 5 ppm in ordinary wheat, it is 140 ppm in black wheat, 80 ppm in blue wheat and 40 ppm in purple wheat.

  • Scientists have claimed that they have used it on rats and found that those who eat colored wheat are less likely to gain weight.

Low yield per acre

  • Yield per acre of such wheat is quite low.

  • The normal wheat yield is 24 quintals per acre, while the yield of colored wheat is 17 to 20 quintals.

  • It is bit expensive to get wheat in the market.

  • NABI has produced it for both summer and winter seasons.

  • In winter, this crop was grown in the fields of Mohali in Punjab, while Himachal and Keylong Lahaul Spiti in summer.
