Fishermen-Farmers Sensitized during Fishing Festival at Aglar River, Uttarakhand

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun sensitized the Fishermen-Farmers during the main Fishing Festival of the Year - 2019, popularly known as “moun” in the Garhwal Region organized at Aglar River. The festival was organized by the communities of the Atjula Silvad Patti in the Jaunpur area, Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand.

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun sensitized the Fishermen-Farmers during the main Fishing Festival of the Year - 2019, popularly known as “moun” in the Garhwal Region organized at Aglar River.

The festival was organized by the communities of the Atjula Silvad Patti in the Jaunpur area, Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand.

Dr. M. Muruganandam, Principal Scientist (Fisheries) along with his team sensitized the fishermen-farmers and media persons on the influences of the tradition, concerns of ecosystems, biodiversity and fisheries resources at the site.  

The team collected the data on various features of fishing festival including water and fish samples for examination. The team also held a group discussion with the fishermen-farmers. The research team stated that the maximum catch was Schizothorax spp. (locally known as Asela), up to 90% during the festival.

The Little of Tor spp. (mahseer, locally known as dhansvi), Neomachelius spp. (locally known as saguru), Mastacembalus armatus (locally known as gooj or baam), Barilius sp. (locally known as Salladi), Neomachelkius spp., Glyptothorax spp. (locally, pagmach), and Garra sp. were also caught during the festival.
