Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a self governing organization established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India which works for the food Safety & regulations in India.  

FSSAI is the only authority that issues licenses to food business operators, including traders, manufacturers, and food store owners. Food Licensing is very critical to any kind of catering business FSSAI registration is a 14 digit registration number or a food license number that must be printed on food packages.  

Types of FSSAI License: 

There are 3 kinds of FSSAI Food Licenses in India; Basic, State & Central 

Basic FSSAI License:  For Food Business Operators involved in Small Scale Food Business with annual turnover of less than Rs 12 Lakh. This is the primary kind of food license and it is issued by the regulatory body FSSAI like a dairy with a capacity of less than 500 ltr/day. 

Trades like tea shops, canteens, food processors and small warehouses require this license. It can be upgraded when the business starts to grow in size and profit. 

FSSAI State License: For Food Business Operators having annual turnover of Rs 12 Lakhs - 20 Crores. The State FSSAI licenses are required for the manufacturers, storage, transporters, retailers, marketers, distributors, etc. 

FSSAI Central License: This License is required by those Food Business Operators who have annual turnover of more than Rs. 20 crores for food businesses to obtain Central FSSAI license. 

Fees structure for FSSAI registration / License in India 

  • Fees for basic FSSAI License is fixed at INR 100 for one year.

  • The FSSAI State License fees ranges from INR 2000/- to 5000/- a year.

  • Fees for FSSAI Central license is fixed at INR 7500/- per year.

How to Apply for Basic FSSAI Food License? 

  • If you are just starting a food business, FSSAI’s Basic Food License is ideal for you

  • Food Business Operators can obtain FSSAI Registration by Filling and Submiting the FSSAI registration Form, i.e, Form A (Application for registration) or Form B (Application for State & Central License) on the FosCoS Portal. 

  • The FSSAI registration form must be submitted along with the required documents. The documents must be uploaded online on the FoS CoS Portal at the time of filling the application.

  • FSSAI will then scrutinize the documents submitted or may even conduct inspection of the premises. On the basis of which, they will either accept or reject the Registration within 7 Days from the date of receipt of the application.

Documents Required for Obtaining Basic FSSAI Food License: 

  • Photo Identity proof of promoters

  • Business Constitution certificate

  • Proof of possession of business premises

  • List of food products manufactured or processed

  • Bank account information
