Saudi Arabia has launched Milaf Cola, a beverage touted as the world’s first date-based soft drink, at the Riyadh Date Festival, marking a significant step in the beverage industry. Introduced by Thurath Al-Madina, a subsidiary of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, Milaf Cola is made entirely from premium, locally sourced dates.

Renowned for their nutritional profile, dates are rich in natural sugars, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and essential minerals. This makes Milaf Cola a healthier alternative to conventional sodas, as it eliminates artificial sweeteners, corn syrup, and cane sugar in favor of the natural sweetness and health benefits of dates.

Soft drinks, typically high in added sugars, can have significant negative impacts on health, including weight gain, increased risk of diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. The excessive consumption of sugary sodas has been linked to higher levels of obesity and related diseases, which can contribute to long-term health complications.

The development of Milaf Cola aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, which promotes sustainable practices and local products. Dates, a staple in Middle Eastern cuisine, contribute essential minerals like magnesium and potassium, positioning Milaf Cola as a beverage that appeals to both taste and health-conscious consumers.

While dates have long been used in traditional Middle Eastern drinks like sharbat, Milaf Cola aims to elevate their use, showcasing them as a versatile and nutritious base for modern beverages. Unlike conventional sodas filled with processed sugars, Milaf Cola offers a naturally sweetened option that prioritizes well-being without sacrificing flavor.

Bander Al-Qahtani, CEO of Thurath Al-Madina, and Abdulrahman Al-Fadley, Saudi Arabia’s agriculture minister, emphasized Milaf Cola’s role in highlighting the country's agricultural heritage. Plans are underway to introduce the beverage to regional and international markets, aiming to reshape the global perception of dates from a traditional snack to an innovative ingredient.

Saudi Arabia is highlighting the potential of its native produce with a nutrient-rich alternative to sugary sodas, setting a new standard for sustainable, health-focused innovations in the beverage industry.
