Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana or PMMSY today (10 September 2020) and will also inaugurate the e-Gopala App, which is a comprehensive breed improvement marketplace & information website for direct use of farmers.

the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday informed that PM Modi will also launch many other initiatives in the fisheries as well as animal husbandry sectors in Bihar.

It must be noted that Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana is a flagship scheme for focused & sustainable development of fisheries sector in India with an estimated investment of Rs. 20,050 crore for its execution during 2020-21 to 2024-25 as part of Aatmanirbhar Bharat package.

The PMO added that the investment of Rs. 20,050 crore under PMMSY is the highest ever in the fisheries sector.

The project in Bihar foresees investment of Rs 1,390 crore with the central share of Rs 535 crore & the additional fish production target pegged at 3 lakh tons.

Prime Minister will also announce the creation of a fish brood bank at Sitamarhi and of aquatic disease referral laboratory at Kishanganj, for which support has been provided under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

The statement said, "These facilities will help in enhancing production & productivity of fish by ensuring timely availability of quality & affordable fish seed for the farmers and also address the need for disease diagnosis and water & soil testing facilities".

It added that the Gopala app is an inclusive breed improvement marketplace & information website for direct use of farmers.

Currently there is no digital platform in the country for farmers managing livestock like buying & selling of disease free germplasm in all forms, availability of quality breeding services & guiding farmers for animal nutrition, treatment of animals using right medicine. Also, there is no mechanism to send alerts on due date for vaccination, pregnancy diagnosis & calving among other issues and notify farmers about different government schemes & campaigns in the area. The e-Gopala app would provide solutions to farmers on all these aspects, according to the PMO.

PM Modi will also launch 1-unit fish feed mill at Madhepura and 2 units of 'Fish on Wheels' assisted at Patna under the 'blue revolution'.

He will also inaugurate a comprehensive fish production technology Centre at Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University in Pusa, Bihar.

Objective of PMMSY

The PMMSY aims at increasing fish production by an extra 70 lakh tonne by 2024-25, increasing fisheries export earnings to Rs 1,00,000 crore by 2024-25, doubling fishers and fish farmers incomes, reducing post-harvest losses from 20% to 25% to about 10% and generation of added 55 lakhs direct & indirect gainful employment opportunities in fisheries sector and related activities
