The United States of America has relaxed regulations to facilitate imports of Indian mangoes and pomegranates, as per reports. As part of a trade agreement, India has agreed to allow American cherries, pork, and Alfalfa into its domestic market.

Market Access for Mangoes & Pomegranates:

After years of wrangling with the USA, the government announced on Saturday that Washington had agreed to loosen such regulations. The move will lift a 2-year ban on the export of Indian mangoes to the United States, which previously permitted imports but later tied them to the export of Indian cherries and fodder.

However, after a meeting between Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and United States Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai, the restrictions on this trade were lifted.

The commerce department announced on Saturday that a framework agreement for implementing the "2 Vs 2 Agri market access issues" had been signed between the department of agriculture and farmer welfare and the US department of agriculture.

“Mango and pomegranate exports will begin in January-February 2022, with pomegranate aril exports beginning in April 2022. The first exports of Alfalfa hay and cherries from the United States will take place in April 2022” according to an official statement.

In addition, following the ministerial discussions, the department of animal husbandry and dairying is ready to provide market access for US pork and has requested that the American administration share a signed copy of the final sanitary certificate in order to finalize a deal.

Following Donald Trump's ouster, trade tensions between the United States and India have cooled, with some progress made on a number of fronts.

Both countries were particularly pleased with the strong resurgence in bilateral merchandise trade in 2021, which increased by about 50%.
