With NABARD’s Support, Kerala to Set up Own Milk Powder Factory

As per the information of Dairy Development Department sources, a factory for the production of milk powder is really necessary in the southern state at this time when Kerala is heading to self-sufficiency in milk production.

Kerala is ready to set up state-of-the-art milk powder factory, as the state is facing serious crisis due to a drop in milk consumption during COVID-19 Pandemic period.  And finally, a high level meeting was called, and final discussion was to set the purposed factory. 

State Forest and Dairy Development MinisterK Raju said, “It has been decided in principle to form the multi-core facility in association with the NABARD. Rs. 53.93 Crore facility would be set up in Northern Malappuram district, under the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation’s (KCMMF) (popularly known as Milma) Malabar Regional Union  

As per the information of Dairy Development Department sources, a factory for the production of milk powder is really necessary in the southern state at this time when Kerala is heading to self-sufficiency in milk production.  

An all-time record had been set in the state by milk procurement through co-operatives and the excess milk has to be powdered and stored. An official statement said, “There was a major crisis due to lower milk consumption during the time of COVID-19.” 

“In this situation, an idea was brought up by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of having an own milk powder production factory.” 

One more thing to mention is that, the existing milk powder factory in the state has been non-operational for a long time due to old technology.
