Mustard Cultivation: Top 15 Scientific Tips for Maximum Yields

Mustard is the most extensively grown oilseed crop in India contributing to about 28.6% in total oilseeds production. Top 13 Scientific Tips for Mustard Cultivation 

1. Farmers should sow mustard from October 5 to 25.

2. Use about 1 kg of seed in one acre of field. 

3. Spray 100 kg Single Super Phosphate, 35 kg Urea and 25 kg Muriate of Potash at the time of sowing. 

4. After this, within a week, take measures to prevent weeds.

5. To prevent weeds, sprinkle one liter of Pendimethalin (30 EC)chemical in 400 liters of water. 

6. After 20 to 25 days of sowing. Remove weeds.

7. The line-to-line distance between plants in the field should be 45 cm, while the plant-to-plant distance should be 20 cm.

8. First irrigation in the crop after 35 to 40 days. If needed, do second irrigation at the time of grain formation. Keep in mind that do not irrigate at the time of flowering in mustard.

9. If the crop is attacked by mahun or champa pest, then sprinkle 5 ml of neem oil in one liter of water. 

10. For this, 100 ml of imidacloprid (8 ml) can be used by mixing it in 200 liters of water. Spray the chemical on the crop in the evening. If needed, do second spray after 10 to 12 days.

11. At the time of formation of beans, pluck the old leaves of mustard plants below 20 to 25 cm.

12. To protect the crop from frost, at the time of flowering and pod formation, mix 250 grams of Thiourea in 200 liters of water and then sprinkle.  

13. Harvest the crop when 75 percent of the beans turn yellow. 

In the past, the government had issued new support prices for Rabi crops for the year 2020-21. This time the minimum support price for mustard crop has been increased by Rs 400 to Rs 5,050 per quintal. That is, due to the increase in the MSP of mustard and the rising price of mustard oil, farmers are getting most attracted towards mustard cultivation.
