Big Push to Pig Farming - Three Capacity Building Programs Organized by GADVASU for Farmers

Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University in Ludhiana organized consecutively three training programs on Pig Farming from 30th Oct. to 01st Nov. 2019, 04th to 08th Nov. 2019 and 13th -15th Nov. 2019 for farmers.

Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University in Ludhiana organized consecutively three training programs on Pig Farming from 30th Oct. to 01st Nov. 2019, 04th  to 08th Nov. 2019 and 13th -15th Nov. 2019 for farmers.

Dr. H. K. Verma, Director Extension Education said that farmers are gaining interest in pig farming due to fast growth in body weight, high prolificacy, high demand of pork and easy marketing of this animal. Dr. Verma stressed that, Pig farming can be a viable mean for sustainable livelihood and can generate employment opportunities.

Dr S K Kansal, Head, Department of Veterinary Extension Education said that Veterinary University is disseminating knowledge  on pig farming through a printed literatures and a mobile app, which can be downloaded from Play store. Also, Veterinary University is providing hand holding support to farmers through Progressive pig farmers association. Dr. Jaswinder Singh and Rajesh Kasrija, training coordinators informed that a total of 74 trainees including woman trainees from different districts of Punjab and nearby states participated in these training programs.

The trainees were provided with theoretical knowledge on various topics like breeds, feeding, shed design, vaccination protocols, disease prevention, value addition of meat and economics of pig farming etc and practical training on handling, measuring temperature, signs of healthy animals/pigs, teeth cutting and castration was given to the trainees. In the coming March, Pashu Palan Mela, Chief Minister Award will be given to the progressive, rural, innovative farmer on the basis of their performance.
