The 10-day e-training on “Recent advances in aquatic animal health and environment management for sustainable aquaculture”, organized by the College of Fisheries (COF) concluded successfully with key recommendations.

The training was organized under the ICAR-NFDB-"National Surveillance Program for Aquatic Animal Diseases" (NSPAAD) of Department of Fisheries (DOF), Ministry of Fisheries Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD), GOI.

During the program, 90 participants got an opportunity to interact with eminent scientists of global repute working on different aspects of aquatic animal health management like aqua-genomics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), vaccines, and environmental health. The program was also live-streamed on social media for enhanced access by interested candidates across the globe.

Significance of “Health Management”

Spotlighting the significance of health management in special reference to intensive aquaculture systems, the program conducted sessions on current & emerging diseases in fish and shrimp; diagnostic tools; prophylaxis; and treatments apropos of one health, surveillance, AMR, alternatives to antibiotics, genomics, environmental wellbeing, food safety, and trading.

Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur (Course Director) informed that Dr. I.S. Azad, Research Scientist, Kuwait Institute for Scientific research presented the key recommendations in the valedictory session.

Highlighting the contribution of the fisheries sector in National GDP and export sector, the chief guest, Dr. Rajiv Siwach, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Regional office (Punjab), proposed that GADVASU and NABARD shall take up collaborative R&D program for socio-economic development of the farming community and economic growth of the region.

Event Highlights:

The Guest of Honor, Vijaykumar Yargal, Executive Director, and NFDB discussed food and environmental safety concerns in aquaculture, with emphasis on responsible health management interventions. Dr. J. P. S. Gill, Director of Research, GADVASU, highlighted the pivotal role of the scientific fraternity in the responsible expansion of the sector.

Addressing the audience, Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU applauded the COF team for organizing a tailor-made training program to deliberate on all key issues related to aquatic animal health management for sustainable development of the sector to meet the projected production targets and maintain food safety and export standards.

He was also impressed by the wide circulation of the training resource material for its maximal sharing among the scientific fraternity. An e-compendium of expert lectures compiled by the course coordinators Dr. Anuj Tyagi, Shathanagouda, A.H., and Naveen Kumar B.T., was released by the chief guest and Vice-Chancellor of the university.
