Meeting of Innovative Fish Farmers Association held at College of Fisheries, GADVASU

The Innovative Fish Farmers Association (IFFA) meeting was held at the College of Fisheries, GADVASU, Ludhiana wherein fish farmers from different districts of the State discussed their problems related to fish culture.

As the summer season has started, new production ponds must be prepared for stocking of fish and already running ponds need special care so that fish can withstand the transition phase of winter to summer. Important tips in this regard were given by Dr Grishma Tewari, mainly regarding water quality and feeding management so that the farmers can protect their fish from various diseases especially parasitic infestations, the chances of which is more with the increase in temperature. 

Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Co-ordinator of IFFA, told the famers about the different schemes under “Pradhan Mantri Matysa Sampda Yojna (PMMSY)”, recently  launched by Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, New Delhi with an estimated investment of Rs. 20,050 Crores for the development of Fisheries in the country in a holistic manner. She gave them detailed information and motivated them to take full advantage of beneficiary oriented activities under PMMSY.

Dr Abhishek Srivastava and Dr Prabjeet Singh also interacted with the farmers and addressed their queries regarding plankton productivity, balanced feeding strategies & health management of fish during the summers.  

Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean of College of Fisheries advised the farmers to stay connected with the university experts for updating their technical knowledge and skills, to take maximum profit from fish farming. She told that such kind of meetings provide common platform, where not only farmers’ queries are addressed, but their feedback is also recorded, so that the university scientists can take up need based region specific research to strengthen the technological support to the farmers of the state.
