The College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry in the heart of Madhya Pradesh at Nanaji Deshmukh Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwa Vidyalaya (Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University) in Jabalpur has unveiled a groundbreaking achievement in poultry breeding, introducing the 'Narmada Nidhi' chicken.

This remarkable chicken variety is a testament to scientific ingenuity and thoughtful crossbreeding, bringing together the best of both native and improved breeds to thrive in the unique rural and tribal landscapes of Madhya Pradesh.

Kadaknath and Jabalpur Colour: Bridging Traditions

The genesis of 'Narmada Nidhi' lies in the fusion of two distinct breeds - the native Kadaknath and the innovative Jabalpur Colour. The Kadaknath breed, deeply rooted in the tribal enclaves of Jhabua and Alirajpur districts, contributes 25% of the genetic heritage. Renowned for its resilience and local adaptation, Kadaknath chickens have been an intrinsic part of the region's agricultural fabric for generations. On the other hand, the 'Jabalpur Colour' breed, an achievement of the Jabalpur University, adds the remaining 75% of the genetic makeup. This colourful broiler breed possesses the characteristics necessary for efficient meat production.

A Dual-Purpose Dynamo: Features that Dazzle

'Narmada Nidhi' chickens are nothing short of visual marvels, adorned with captivating multi-coloured plumage patterns that blend shades of black, brown, grey, and mixed tones. Beyond their aesthetics, these chickens boast robust body conformation, allowing them to swiftly navigate free-range environments. This attribute not only aids in natural scavenging but also serves as a natural defence mechanism against potential predators.

Adaptable and Resilient: Tailored for Local Realities

One of the most impressive aspects of 'Narmada Nidhi' is its adaptability to the challenging climatic conditions prevalent in Madhya Pradesh. These chickens exhibit remarkable resilience, making them a favoured choice among farmers, even in the remote corners of the region. Their growth and production potential exceed that of their native counterparts, enabling them to flourish even when faced with sub-optimal nutrition and management practices.

Performance Prowess: Growth and Reproduction

As 'Narmada Nidhi' chickens grow, their remarkable potential becomes evident. At just 8 weeks of age, they reach a weight of 700 to 800 grams, demonstrating their efficient growth rate. As they mature, male birds attain a weight of approximately 1550 grams, while female birds reach around 1300 grams by the 20-week mark under backyard conditions.

The reproductive capabilities of 'Narmada Nidhi' hens further underscore their significance. Female birds mature at an average age of 161 days under intensive conditions. In backyard settings, they lay an impressive 181 eggs, a stark contrast to the modest 45 eggs produced by the local native chickens. Even under semi-intensive management, 'Narmada Nidhi' hens lay approximately 195 eggs. These eggs are distinguished by their brown shells and medium size, weighing around 50.2 grams.

A Sustainable Solution: Enhancing Livelihoods

In essence, 'Narmada Nidhi' represents more than a poultry breed; it symbolizes a sustainable solution tailored to the unique needs of Madhya Pradesh's rural and tribal communities. By combining the strengths of native resilience with modern breeding techniques, this innovative breed holds the potential to uplift livelihoods, promote food security, and celebrate the rich agricultural heritage of the region. As 'Narmada Nidhi' chickens roam the landscapes of Madhya Pradesh, they tell a story of harmonious coexistence between tradition and progress, a story that continues to unfold with each cluck and flutter.
