Training on 'Clean Meat Production' for Butchers, Budding Entrepreneurs Held at GADVASU

Department of Livestock Products Technology (LPT) has organised 5-days Practical training programme on ‘“Clean Meat Production and Byproducts Utilization for revenue generation and environment protection”, from August 26 to 30, 2019 for the butchers/budding entrepreneurs/ floor level workers of meat industry with an intention to educate them clean meat production practices, environment safety and animal welfare issue. Dr. Manish Chatli HoD, LPT informed that Directorate of Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana has sponsored this training programme under Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Yojana (RKVY), Govt of India for the benefits of Schedule caste/Schedule Tribes. Dr O.P.Malav and Dr Rajesh V Wagh acted as course coordinator. The course content of training programme included selection of healthy food animals, painless slaughtering, and hygienic meat handling methods, personal hygiene, disposal and utilization of byproducts.

Dr O.P.Malav and Dr Rajesh V Wagh acted as course coordinator. The course content of training programme included selection of healthy food animals, painless slaughtering, and hygienic meat handling methods, personal hygiene, disposal and utilization of byproducts. The experts discussed about meat quality standards and FSSAI guidelines for setting up a meat shop. Total 22 participants including 2 female trainees had attended the training including butchers, meat shop owners and small entrepreneurs. The participants visited Modern Poultry Processing Plant to have better practical exposure. The successful entrepreneurs also shared their views with the participants and provided the tips to the trainee. 

Dr Harish Verma, Director Extension Education distributed “Hygiene kit” (gum shoes, SS meat cutting knife, apron, gloves, mouth and head gear etc.) to the participants. He has also released a compendium developed by the department faculty for this training programme. He distributed the certificates to the participants on successful completion of the training and said that the clean meat production is first step to safeguard the health of meat consumers. He also stressed on the processing of meat industry byproducts for environment protection and revenue generation. 

Dr A.S. Nanda, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU highlighted that the indiscrete disposal of byproducts may lead to spread of various infectious diseases including rabies in dogs. He applauded the efforts of HOD, LPT, Course Director for organizing a programme, which has outreach to the floor level workers of the society for the sanitation measures. He further stressed that such programme will safeguard the health of the consumers of Ludhiana and Punjab by providing them clean, wholesome and safe meat and meat products.
