Training Program on ‘Fish Farming’ Organized by College of Fisheries, GADVASU

As many as 27 aspiring youth, women and entrepreneurs from Punjab & Haryana had attended five days training program on ‘Fish Farming’ organized by the College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

As many as 27 aspiring youth, women and entrepreneurs from Punjab & Haryana had attended five days training program on ‘Fish Farming’ organized by the College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

Head Department of Aquaculture and Course Coordinator of the training programme, Dr. Meera D. Ansal said that such type of training programs are being organized with key focus on providing self employment skills to various stake holders including jobless youth, rural women & farming community, besides updating the scientific skills of fish farmers with latest technologies for maintaining sustainably optimized production levels. 

The technical coordinators Dr. Sachin O. Khairnar and Dr. Abhishek Srivastava told that the trainees were given complete hands on training from construction of pond to preparation, stocking & management till harvesting & marketing. In addition, demonstration cum practical sessions were conducted for seed handling, water quality management,  stocking, feed formulation & manufacturing, health management practices &  disease diagnosis & treatment in respect to various species such as carps, shrimps and pangas catfish. 

Trainees were also provided practical hands on training in fish processing for preservation & value addition. They were also updated about different integrated fish farming models & importance of mass media in creating an effective market for their produce. Through a special session, they were told about different ongoing promotional schemes of the State for providing startup financial support for fish, shrimp & integrated fish farming, besides informing them about various livestock training programs & extension activities organized by the University.

During the event, chief guest, Dr. Harish Kumar Verma, Director, Extension Education of GADVASU motivated farmers to obtain scientific skills & remain attached with the University for reaping maximum economic benefits from their landholdings via various livestock farming practices. Considering the development of shrimp farming in south west salt affected districts of the State, Punjab is moving very fast towards ‘Blue Revolution’ plateau, told Dr. Kulbir Singh Sandhu, Dean, College of Fisheries.
