Gautama Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment at Bodhgaya and first preached the Dharma in Sarnath.

Lord Buddha's followers take this day extremely seriously and do all in their power to make the Buddha pleased. They observe a tight fast and only break it after the day is done.

Buddhists believe that on this day in Buddha's life, all three key events occurred: his birth, his enlightenment, and his death, or Paranirvana.
