Haldi (Turmeric): Why it is so Important in Indian Weddings

The wedding season is around the corner, let us take a look at one of the most vibrant events celebrated in the Hindu marriage ceremony - ‘HALDI’. The Haldi ceremony which is also known as pithi ceremony is celebrated before the actual wedding day. Haldi day is the most colorful day for both the bride and groom.

The spice called turmeric (haldi) is mixed with rose water, milk, mustard oil, almond powder, sandalwood powder, lemon juice, and doob grass and made into a paste of thick consistency which is applied on the face and bodies of the bride and groom.

Importance of yellow color

The use of yellow color is considered auspicious in Hindu rituals and tradition. It is believed that the bright sunny color sets off the bride and groom for a fresh and healthy start in their newly married life.

Let’s look at some reasons as to why Haldi constitutes such an important place in Indian Wedding Rituals:

1. Haldi to ward off the ‘Evil Eye’ (Buri Nazar)

It is popularly believed in the Indian culture that using Haldi wards off the evil eye and bars it from affecting the bride and groom. Both the bride and groom are mostly given a sacred red thread or some amulets to wear and keep with themselves to not come in contact with anything inauspicious before their special day. They are not allowed to leave their houses after the haldi ceremony for further protection from the evil spirits.

2. For that extra glow on skin

When it comes to cosmetic beauty Indian spices are not too far behind and Haldi is one of them. Haldi is used to ensure the couple looks radiant and beautiful on their wedding day. Turmeric contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components which are said to leave skin looking lustrous and glowing. 

3. For the purification of body and as an antiseptic

In the medicinal sciences haldi is known for its exfoliating properties which is said to cleanse and purify the skin by removing dead skin cells and detoxifying skin. It also works as an antiseptic which makes sure that the couple is protected from any cuts, bruises and ailments before marriage.

4. The yellow color of the spice is auspicious

In the Hindu traditional practices, the yellow color of Haldi is considered auspicious to mark the beginnings of a new relationship. The auspiciousness of this color protects the newlywed couple and its color ushers in a life full of prosperity for the couple. This is the reason why a lot of couples also wear Yellow on their wedding day.

5. For the preparation of wedding

The haldi ceremony in itself is one of the major events of Indian marriage which marks the beginning of the Hindu marriage which is followed by events like Mehndi (Henna ceremony) and Sangeet (Dance ceremony). Haldi ceremony is also believed to do away with some of the pre-wedding anxiety that the bride and groom may feel given that haldi also works as a mild anti-depressant and a remedy for headaches.
