A ration card is a crucial document that allows the general public to access a variety of government schemes aimed at supporting the needy. With this card, individuals can avail benefits such as free or subsidized rice, pulses, wheat, and sugar from the Public Distribution System (PDS) shops. Additionally, in several states, poor families receive essentials like lungis, towels, dhotis, and sarees through their ration cards.

Beyond accessing food supplies, a ration card serves as an essential document for various administrative purposes. It is required for opening bank accounts, enrolling in savings schemes at the post office, purchasing mobile phones, and creating or updating an Aadhaar card. Hence, registering one's name on the ration card is critical for receiving government assistance and conducting essential activities.

UP Govt Halts Mandatory e-KYC for Ration Cards to Ensure Smooth Food Distribution

Recently, ration card users in Uttar Pradesh received significant relief as the state government temporarily halted the mandatory e-KYC process required for receiving ration supplies. The government had initiated e-KYC to verify ration card holders and their listed consumers. This process required each consumer to visit the ration shop and authenticate their identity using the e-POS machine. However, the implementation led to distribution challenges, with less than 50% of consumers receiving their food grains by the designated date. Consequently, the government has postponed the e-KYC requirement until further notice, easing immediate access to food supplies for cardholders.

Eligibility Criteria for Getting a Ration Card

To apply for a ration card, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an Indian citizen.

  • Must be over 18 years of age.

  • No family member should hold a government job.

  • The annual family income should not exceed Rs 5 lakh.

  • The household should not possess a four-wheeler.

  • The monthly income of any family member should not exceed Rs 10,000.
