Which Indian Cities are Prone to Frequent Earthquakes?
People in India have an important issue on their minds in the wake of the horrific and destructive earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, a natural disaster that claimed more than 7,500 lives and is still increasing. Three very strong earthquakes struck Turkey within a short period of time.
On 6 February 2023, an earthquake with a 7.7 magnitude occurred in the Pazarcik district of the Kahramanmaras province. Later, according to the Anadolu Agency, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake with a focal point in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras shook the area and affected numerous other provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, and Gaziantep.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that on 6 February 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck Goksun, Turkey. Syria and Lebanon were two more nations in the region where the earthquake was felt. There were other smaller or somewhat intense earthquakes in addition to these three.
In the meantime, residents of these five cities in India should exercise caution as they are located in a high-seismic zone. People who live in these earthquake zones must be prepared for any situation because India is divided into various seismic zones.
4 Types of Seismic Zones in India:
The whole northeastern region of India, together with portions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, a portion of North Bihar, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, is included in Zone-V.
The remaining areas of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, the Union Territory of Delhi, Sikkim, the northern bits of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, some of Gujarat, and the tiny portions of Maharashtra towards the west coast and Rajasthan are all included in Zone-IV.
Kerala, Goa, the Lakshadweep Islands, the remaining portions of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and West Bengal, as well as portions of Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Orissa, and the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, are included in Zone-III.
The remaining areas of the nation are covered under Zone II.
These are the five Indian cities most at risk for earthquakes, according to private weather forecaster Skymet.
Guwahati: Due to its location in India's seismic zone 5, the city is vulnerable to earthquakes. Devastating earthquakes have occurred in Guwahati, and tremors frequently occur there.
Srinagar: Another Indian city that is prone to earthquakes is Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, it belongs to seismic zone 5.
Delhi: The nation's capital is the third-most earthquake-prone region in India.
Mumbai: The seismic Zone 3 includes Mumbai as well. Mumbai's proximity to the ocean raises the possibility of a tsunami.
Chennai: Previously, Chennai was in zone 2. However, the city recently moved to zone 3.
