Indian chickpeas markets had appreciated in the recently ended week. Reports of government procurement to begin March onwards supported the market, in addition to improvement in the product demand.
Lower arrivals in major mandis also favored the price rise. Over previous week the average prices in mandis of Delhi/Bikaner and Akola are up Rs.100-150/qtl approximately. The upward momentum can cool off to some extent in the forthcoming week as supplies are adequate in the country while sowing progress has been above previous year till now.
The Government has enough stocks to feed the market before new crop arrives. There are estimations of yields to surpass their recent five year average because of ample moisture reserves following last year's monsoon season. Latest data says that the planted area for chickpeas in India has increased from 10.731 million hectares at this time last year to a record 11.2 million.
The average output for this year is estimated near to 11.74 million MT, up from 11.35 million last year. At present most of the stock lies with the government. The potential for a significant increase in Chana production may limit the possibility of any reduction in the import duties on peas, or relaxation of the tariff rate quotas, in near future.
