Lentil exports from Canada, Australia increase in May; Canadian green pea export drops slightly
Lentil exports from Canada had been quite impressive in May 2020. As per data from Statistics Canada, Lentil exports from Canada were quite healthy during the month of May, versus April month. Shipments totaled 326,517 metric tons (MT) for the month, up 41% from the 231,500 MT exported the previous month.

Shipments totaled 326,517 metric tons (MT) for the month, up 41% from the 231,500 MT exported the previous month. So far 2,095,502 MT of lentil has been shipped from Canada, compared to 1,647,327 during the previous marketing year. Latest trade data conveyed that leading buyer was India, taking 92,121 MT of Canadian lentils. Bangladesh was the second most important buyer seeking 56,610 MT, followed by Turkey at 39,841 MT.
Trade data also revealed that export of Green lentils has shown decent jump in the month of May as against April month. Movement to overseas destinations stood at 75,025 metric tons (MT) during the month, up 75% from the 42,876 MT exported the previous month. Exports so far total 362,343 MT, compared to 387,568 during the last marketing year. India was the number one buyer purchasing 15,514 MT. Morocco was the second most important destination buying 9,165 MT, followed by United Arab Emirates at 8,223 MT.
Even red lentil exports also increased for the same period as per Statistics Canada. Total shipment of red lentils from Canada was reported at 177,396 metric tons (MT), up from 127,833 MT the previous month. This boosted export sales so far during the marketing year to 1,253,741, up 26% last year. As usual India was biggest purchaser, taking 62,190 MT. Bangladesh was the second most important consumer buying 56,062 MT, followed by Turkey at 19,281 MT. Overseas demand for lentils from Australia was strong during the month of May and like Canada, export sales from Australia showed significant jump in May versus April month. According to trade data from Australia Bureau of Statistics, net lentils shipped in the month stood at 72,191 metric tons (MT), up 36% from the previous month's total of 52,962. So far total exports have reached 470,090 MT, up from 145,008 in the same period the last marketing year. Biggest consumer was Bangladesh, which purchased 45,530 MT of Australian lentils. Sri Lanka was the second most important consumer receiving 9,644 MT, followed by India at 6,568 MT.
Statistics Canada reported strong export sales of yellow peas from Canada for the month of May. Strong export demand pushed overseas sales versus previous month i.e. April. Total quantity of 340,909 metric tons (MT) was shipped which was up from 306,348 MT the previous month. This increased export sales so far during the marketing year to 2,668,071, and year on year the increase was 28%. Leading consumer was China, buying 210,483 MT. Second most important buyer was Bangladesh was, purchasing 123,895 MT, followed by Philippines at 1,063 MT.
Likewise, moderate increase was reported for Canada's field peas export shipments May, versus April month. Export sales reached 401,492 metric tons (MT) in the month, up 7% from the 374,562 MT shipped the previous month. Exports so far has reached 3,239,841 MT, compared to 2,655,827 in the same period the previous marketing year. Topmost imported during the month was China and the country purchased 239,318 MT. Bangladesh was second, purchasing 123,895 MT, and third biggest importer was United States at 6,316 MT.
On the other hand green pea exports from Canada showed a drop versus April, according to the Statistics Canada report. Leading buyer was China and imported green peas 12,698 MT in the month. Colombia was the second most important consumer receiving 3,169 MT, followed by United Arab Emirates at 2,817 MT. Total exports according to the report stood at 27,467 metric tons (MT) in May that was lower by 19% from the previous month's total of 33,745. Exports sales for the current marketing year have reached 276,267 MT, up from 271,754 during the previous marketing year.
